AMED TIMES - The verdict has been announced in the Kobani Case. Here are the sentences handed down to the defendants:
The 83rd hearing in the Kobani case, which was also attended by former HDP co-chairs Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ, was held today at the Sincan Prison Complex of the 22nd Ankara Heavy Penal Court.
Ahmet Türk sentenced to 10 years in prison
The presiding judge stated: "The file has been examined and there is no need for further investigation. I will now explain the sentences for the individual defendants and the charges for which they were convicted. To arrive at this conscientious conviction, the evidence in the record has been reviewed and such a conscientious conviction has been reached." The judge began reading the 130-page judgement. When the president announced the verdict on Ahmet Türk, lawyers and spectators in the courtroom began to protest with applause and slogans. The lawyers left the courtroom in protest and the presiding judge interrupted the reading of the judgement.
The reading of the judgement continued in the absence of the defendants and their lawyers.
The mayor of the city of Mardin, Ahmet Türk, was acquitted of the charge of disrupting the integrity of the state, but sentenced to 10 years in prison for membership of a terrorist organisation.
Ayhan Bilgen and Altan Tan were acquitted.
Ayla Akat was acquitted of the charge of disrupting the unity and integrity of the state, but was sentenced to 9 years and 9 months in prison for membership of a terrorist organisation. Considering the time Akat spent in prison, it was decided to release her.
Ayhan Bilgen was separately acquitted of the charges of disrupting the unity and integrity of the state and membership of a terrorist organisation.
Altan Tan was acquitted of the charges of disrupting the unity and integrity of the state and founding a terrorist organisation.
Tan was also acquitted of other charges.
Ali Ürküt was sentenced to 13 years and 4 months in prison for aiding and abetting the disruption of the unity of the state and 3 years and 9 months in prison for incitement to commit a criminal offence.
Alp Altınörs was sentenced to 18 years for aiding and abetting the disruption of state unity and 4 years and 6 months for incitement to commit a criminal offence.
The sentence for Figen Yüksekdağ has been determined.
Figen Yüksekdağ was sentenced to 19 years in prison for aiding and abetting the disruption of state unity, 4 years and 6 months for incitement to commit a criminal offence and 1 year and 6 months for propaganda for a terrorist organisation. Former HDP leader Figen Yüksekdağ was sentenced to 2 years for violating the Law on Assemblies and Demonstrations No. 2911. In addition, she was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months each for two separate speeches, making a total of 3 years for organisational propaganda. Yüksekdağ, who was also sentenced to 3 months in prison for violating the election ban, received a total sentence of 30 years and 3 months, and her imprisonment continues.
Gültan Kışanak was acquitted.
Gültan Kışanak was acquitted of the charge of disrupting the unity and integrity of the state, but was sentenced to 12 years in prison for membership of a terrorist organisation. Considering the time Kışanak spent in prison, it was decided to release her.
Selahattin Demirtaş was sentenced to 24 years in prison.
Selahattin Demirtaş was sentenced to 20 years for aiding and abetting the disruption of state unity and 4 years and 6 months for incitement to commit a criminal offence.
In addition, Demirtaş was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months for his Nevruz speech in Diyarbakır and 1 year and 6 months for his speech on 29 February 2016, in which he called on the public to disobey the law. It was decided to continue Demirtaş’s imprisonment.
Sabahat Tuncel was acquitted.
Sabahat Tuncel was acquitted of the charge of disrupting the unity and integrity of the state, but was sentenced to 12 years in prison for membership of a terrorist organisation.
The release of Tuncel was decided taking into account the duration of his imprisonment.
